Hematoma

Hematoma Injuries in Childbirth

A hematoma is a condition in which blood pools and collects under the skin. Newborn babies often incur hematomas on their scalps, caused by the strong forces applied to the head during labor.

This sort of injury may be evidence that a medical professional has forcefully – and perhaps improperly or negligently – used forceps or a vacuum to assist with the baby’s delivery. These procedures can cause small blood vessels under the periosteum (the membrane that lines the outer surface of bone) to burst, which forms pools of blood under the skin on a baby’s skull. These severe bruises can last as long as a few days to a few months.

The resulting pools of blood usually heal and fade away on their own, without causing further complications. However, more severe bruising can lead to large, visible pockets of blood beneath the scalp, which can linger for weeks or months and lead to more serious health problems, including:

  • anemia, if the blood collection is substantial
  • jaundice, which occurs when the baby’s underdeveloped liver can’t process all of the old red blood cells after the body tries to reabsorb the blood that pooled in the bruise. An infant who has jaundice may require phototherapy as treatment for this condition.
  • infection that develops in the pooled blood
  • calcium deposits that form in the pool of blood if it remains there too long, resulting in an unsightly, hard bump

These injuries can lead to substantial complications in the fragile first few months of a baby’s life. Anemia, infections, or jaundice can pose life-threatening scenarios to babies and small children. If not properly diagnosed and treated during the weeks following childbirth, cephalohematoma injuries may impact a child’s development and lead to long-term health complications.
